We are very excited to be welcoming the BBC Symphony Orchestra to Spitalfields this summer for the UK premiere of Spaces of Blank by sort-after composer Michel van der Aa. The incredible mezzo-soprano Stephanie Marshall sings alongside orchestra and soundtrack in this beautiful and imaginative work.
Bas van Putten has described the piece as “everything that a ‘normal’ song cycle is not” and, when reviewing the CD release, Andrew Clements from The Guardian explains: “an electronic soundtrack adds an extra layer, and the vocal writing remains utterly detached … worlds away from traditional word setting.” Spaces of Blank is an engaging and accessible contemporary work and there is no doubt that it will leave an impression on the listener.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform Spaces of Blank alongside Stein’s chamber version of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 on Saturday 18 June in Christ Church Spitalfields.
