Iconic Manchester rock band The Smiths, like Purcell, were pre-eminent exponents of English song-craft, addressing themes of loneliness, adolescent longing and violence in their four Gold-selling albums of the 1980s. The Coveryard collective of arrangers and multi-instrumentalists, led by Josephine Stephenson and Sarah Latto, will interweave The Smiths songs with new arrangements of Purcell, shape-shifting between chamber band and a capella vocal ensemble to explore veins of English melancholy through this kaleidoscope of musical genres.
