The shortlist for BASCA’s British Composer Awards 2013 has been announced and we’re delighted to discover that Richard Bullen’s Elemental Songs and Dances has received a nomination in the Community or Educational Project category.
Richard graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2009 and began working with us last year on a project which involved two of our Neighbourhood Schools, Osmani and Kobi Nazrul Primary Schools.
Elemental Songs and Dances was jointly commissioned by Spitalfields Music and the Royal Academy of Music. Its premiere took place in February in a monumental performance where professional baritone Omar Ebrahim was joined by our Trainee Music Leaders, an ensemble of RAM musicians, Sam Glazer, John Webb, Open Academy Fellows, and children from Tower Hamlets.
The piece explored the four traditional elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water through folk songs and the children’s own compositions. The performance was the culmination of a six-month project wherein librettist Hazel Gould delivered creative writing workshops with the children, producing texts that Richard incorporated in his composition.
We would like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who was involved in the project. Fingers crossed for the final awards ceremony on Tuesday 3 December at Goldsmiths’ Hall!
“The performance was astonishing… over 100 primary school children speaking, singing and acting with the music while moving on the platform and all round the hall, the music itself clearly absorbing and delighting their imagination”
