“It was wonderful to see so many of the children who are normally introverted or shy come out of themselves. Thanks to all of your team who helped trigger our children’s imaginations.”
Head Teacher, Shapla Primary School
Each year we work with a network of local schools in Tower Hamlets, a borough facing the highest rate of child poverty in the UK and significant challenges around educational attainment, aspiration and social cohesion. In the schools we work with, over 88% of children don’t speak English as a first language, and over 50% are eligible for free school meals.
We aim to respond to these challenges through our Neighbourhood Schools programme which brings free and accessible music projects to over 1,500 children each year. Our projects support children’s creativity, build their confidence and develop their skills through interactive sessions led by experienced workshop leaders and professional musicians.

Examples of past projects:
SoundHouse: Year 4 pupils at Shapla Primary School worked with musicians from The Society of Strange & Ancient Instruments to create new musical instruments and sounds using everyday objects. They learned about the science behind sound, feeding into the Key Stage 2 science curriculum, and explore musical play, singing and composition.
Phoenix: Continuing our long-standing relationship with Phoenix School, we delivered six weekly workshops for pupils with Special Educational Needs in Summer 2017. The students explored the theme of ‘change’, writing their own songs about their feelings on the topic, and performed to a supportive audience at the end of the project.
Cherry Trees: Cherry Trees is a school for primary-aged boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, which we have worked with for more than ten years. We brought professional musicians and a poet into the school to develop the boys’ creative abilities, personal skills and confidence. They wrote their own songs, raps and poems with support from specialist workshop leaders, leading up to a performance to family and friends.
In-school performances: We bring free concerts designed for young listeners into the schools, giving hundreds of children their first inspiring experience of live music.
