After playing and recording with The Guest Stars through the 80s, singer and musician Laka D moved into the world of theatre composition and performance, working with New York’s Split Britches and white-face drag clowns, Bloolips. Several seasons as composer/MD with Gay Sweatshop included the award winning musical Stupid Cupid. She still always wrote and performed her own exuberant and imaginative songs, and worked with many groups as pianist and singer as well as leading her own bands. She sang with the 12 piece ‘Emma Peel Fan Club’, and currently can be seen and heard out from time to time with ‘The Electric Landladies’. Laka works with many different groups, currently incuding nursing and midwifery students, dancers and Hackney Council workers as well as Women Sing East. She regularly conducts large groups of Hackney and Lambeth children in singing festivals. She has done numerous projects with Voicelab, the singing initiative at Southbank Centre. She has a new CD, ‘Me And Susan Sarandon’, out at the end of the year.
