Spitalfields Music began as a classical music festival 36 years ago, inspired by Christ Church, Spitalfields. Hawksmoor’s masterpiece was under threat of demolition but even in its run-down state, it was a wonderful space in which to hear music.
From a single event in 1976, the Festival soon began to grow and expand into a range of venues programming early and new music. None of the venues were formal concert halls and a characteristic informally emerged. In 1989 work with local schools began and our learning programme was founded and in 1996 a Winter Festival was added in December each year.
To date Spitalfields Music has produced 52 Festivals for a live audience of over 1 million and broadcast audience of over 10 million, commissioned 54 new works and engaged over 150,000 people in the Learning & Participation Programme.
